Summer Book Review: The Island by Elin Hilderbrand

Summer Book Review: The Island by Elin Hilderbrand

When summer comes along, I think we all want to be lying on the beach reading. I love an easy beach read, and no one does it better than Elin Hilderbrand. I’ve read her recent books, and I’ve also gone back to older ones. Recently, I read The Island, which didn’t disappoint. The beauty of this book (and so many others) is that sometimes we don’t have the luxury of a summer lounging at the beach, and yet we can feel whisked away while sitting inside our house reading about the summer escapades of Hildebrand’s characters.

The story, The Island mainly takes place on the picturesque island of Tuckernuck off the coast of Nantucket. Now, I’ve never been to Tuckernuck Island and likely will never be invited there, so it’s fun to imagine summer life for those who have the pleasure of experiencing it.

This story follows several romantic relationships, but perhaps more importantly, it highlights the relationships between two sets of sisters, as well as two mother-daughter relationships. There is a relationship between an ex-husband and ex-wife which does feel a bit starry-eyed and unrealistic, but that’s the beauty of reading a novel like this. Complicated relationships can be made simpler, and it can be quite refreshing to see how those play out. The main storyline of the book is a bit mysterious, as we are trying to figure out why one of the main characters abruptly called off her engagement, canceling the lavish wedding plans her family had been making.

Your local book store may have The Island on hand, but since it’s not the newest book by Elin Hilderbrand, you may want to check out the local library, or you can always grab your copy on Amazon.

Happy Summer Reading!
