If you’re looking to hang on to summer, I have the perfect read for you. The Summer House by Lauren K. Denton tells the story of a woman who wakes up one morning to discover that her husband has left her. This is not a spoiler; this happens at the beginning of the book, and it sets the stage for a beautiful chapter to unfold in this woman’s life.
The story is realistic in that the main character Lily doesn’t truly understand why her husband wants to leave her; she questions their entire relationship and if they ever should have gotten married in the first place, and the cherry on top is that she has to deal with her meddling mother-in-law who Lily knows wishes she never married her son to begin with.
The potentially unrealistic aspects of the book are what make it so enjoyable. I won’t give too much away, but Lily picks herself up, and moves to a new place filled with new opportunities for a home, a career, friends, and of course, love.
We all need a little romance in our lives, even if we don’t really want any romance, and this book is just enough to make you feel that even when the rug has been pulled out from under you, you can get your footing more quickly than you think.
Enjoy this light divorce read and know that your next chapter also can be filled with more good things than you are currently imagining.
