Why You Need a Divorce Squad

Divorce will be one of the most challenging transitions you go through in your life, but it’s also an opportunity for growth, reinvention, and empowerment. To navigate this journey successfully, it’s essential to surround yourself with a “divorce squad” — a team of trusted professionals who can guide you through the process and help lay the groundwork for a thriving post-divorce life.  When I was going through my divorce, I had a very hard time connecting to professional support.  My goal is that you have an easier time finding the right connections here.

Based on my divorce experience, I compiled a list of professional types who can help you through the process. Let’s take a look at each and what they can do for you.

1. Divorce Attorney

Your legal advocate is the cornerstone of your divorce squad. A divorce attorney ensures your rights are protected, helps negotiate favorable terms, and represents you in court if necessary. They provide clarity on legal issues and work to secure the best outcome for your future.

2. Divorce Mediator

If you and your spouse are open to collaboration, a divorce mediator can help facilitate productive discussions and negotiate a fair settlement. Mediators aim to reduce conflict, save time, and minimize the emotional toll of divorce. A mediator can be a cost-effective approach to divorce if you are in an amicable situation that supports mediation.

3. Tax Professional

Divorce has significant tax implications, from the division of assets to filing statuses and potential deductions. A tax professional ensures you understand the financial impact of your decisions and helps you avoid costly mistakes, maximizing your financial stability. It may make sense to connect with a tax advisor before you agree on a final settlement to understand any and all impact the proposed agreement will have on your filings.

4. Estate Planner

Your estate planner will update essential documents like your will, power of attorney, and beneficiaries. They help ensure your assets are distributed according to your wishes, reflecting your new circumstances and protecting your legacy. It’s also really important to update your healthcare proxy which may currently be giving rights to your soon-to-be ex.

5. Financial Professional

A financial professional provides critical advice on budgeting, investments, and long-term planning. They can help you analyze settlement offers, manage debt, and ensure you’re set up for financial independence after the divorce. Do not feel ashamed or embarrassed if you’ve been uninvolved in your marital finances! This is really common and you will feel empowered to educate yourself with the help of a financial professional.

6. Real Estate Agent

Whether you’re selling the marital home or searching for a new place, a skilled real estate agent understands the emotional and financial weight of these decisions. They’ll guide you through the process with care and expertise, ensuring you make informed choices. You will want to understand the full picture of what you can afford before agreeing to anything in your final agreement.

7. Mortgage Lender

If you’re purchasing a new home or refinancing an existing property, a mortgage lender will assess your options and secure the best loan terms, ensuring you have a stable foundation for the next chapter of your life. Speak to the mortgage lender to determine what you can afford based on your new single member household.

8. Insurance Professional

Divorce often necessitates updating insurance policies, from your car to your home coverage. An insurance professional ensures your policies align with your new circumstances, providing peace of mind and protection. It is likely that if you are on any joint policies with you soon-to-be ex that you will need to establish your own individual policies.

9. Divorce Coach

A divorce coach offers emotional support, practical guidance, and a clear roadmap for moving forward. They help you stay focused, make informed decisions, and rebuild confidence throughout the divorce process.  Working with a coach can help save you money as you’ll have another resource to ask questions that is not your divorce attorney. I truly wish that I had known about divorce coaches when I was going through my divorce; it would have been so helpful!

10. Health and Wellness Professional

Taking care of your physical and mental health is critical for your well being and the well being of your children. A health and wellness coach can help you manage stress, maintain your well-being, and rebuild your strength during and after the divorce. And if you have kids, taking care of your own health is critical to helping them through this transition.

11. Title or Real Estate Attorney

A title or real estate attorney ensures that property transfers are handled legally and smoothly. They review documents, clear titles, and protect your interests in real estate transactions during the divorce process and after if you’re purchasing a new property.

12. Lifestyle Professional

Finally, a lifestyle professional, such as a personal stylist, career coach, or organizational expert, helps you rediscover your identity and embrace your new chapter. They’ll guide you in building a life that reflects your goals and aspirations.

The Power of a Divorce Squad

Divorce can feel isolating, but with a diverse and supportive team, you’re never alone. Each member of your divorce squad brings specialized expertise, ensuring you’re equipped to face challenges and seize opportunities. By surrounding yourself with a strong team of professionals, you’re not just navigating the end of one chapter — you’re building a brighter, stronger future.
