For everyone it can be different – what does it mean to be “healthy”?

Very often, women going through a divorce feel they need to prioritize their healthy and often ask, really, what does it mean to be “healthy”? In the midst of a life-changing event such as a divorce, women are often in the middle of reconstructing lots of areas of their life and their health needs to be a focus. But how to define it and where to start? Today we’ve got some fantastic advice and support from Dawn McGee, Nutrition Coach.

No one thing defines “healthy”

You might find yourself pinning up-and-coming diets on Pinterest or following beautiful Instagram influencers in your search for some magical key to the world of “healthy.” The real question, however, isn’t just how you become healthy, but what does “healthy” really mean to you?

You can ask everyone from doctors to lifetime dieters, and they’ll probably all have a different response to what “healthy” is. Some people might consider health to mean fasting from dawn to dusk, eliminating all carbs from their plates, or counting every calorie that touches their lips. The reality is that fad diets such as these just aren’t sustainable. Life is too short to eat grilled chicken salad every day and miss out on all the joy that comes from really great food and a glass of wine.

Before you commit to a restricting diet in your search for “healthy,” you need to understand that true health looks a little different for everyone, and defining it for yourself is the first step to take. Understanding your own goals is crucial, and you need to consider not just where you are going, but what you want your journey to look like.

Sustainability is the most important part

Personally, I always advise those that I work with that sustainability is the most important part of finding a routine that will work for you. In the end, crash diets will always lead you to do just the same: crash and burn. That’s why I love that I get to dedicate my time to helping women find a sustainable routine so that they can reach their own vision of “healthy” and never diet again!

My own version of health includes staying a little light on my feet because I have multiple joint replacements that I need to take care of. It’s important to me to stay physically healthy so that I can fully enjoy all that life has to offer. In my own definition for myself, being “healthy” means being fit enough to take care of my joints to avoid another surgery, and also be able to enjoy hikes with friends or long bicycle rides without totally crashing afterwards. It also means that when my kiddo wants to go off trail and climb up the rocks, I can do that too!

Healthy, for me, also means that I make sure my food has lots of flavor and international flair. And a fabulous glass of wine to complement it! Enjoying my meals and enjoying my life are two of the many things that bring me joy and keep my stress low – another key component of being healthy.

Healthy is what makes sense to you

Because I’ve defined what “healthy” looks like to me, I can now tailor my lifestyle to a journey that makes sense for me. Keeping my goals in mind, I typically choose healthy foods that give me energy and I prioritize strength and stamina in my workouts. I also prioritize experiencing every moment of joy that I can take advantage of, whether that’s a great meal, an afternoon ‘playing hooky’ with my kiddo, or traveling to explore a new city. In my own version of a “healthy” lifestyle, I do all the things I love and never feel deprived.

What does it mean to be healthy? The reality of health is that there are no magic beans, no switch you can flip, no special pills or shakes to take away all of your woes. True health does not mean that you finally fit into a certain size of jeans, or that you only eat grilled chicken salads, or that you won’t ever have health problems pop up. True health is a spectrum, and you choose what it looks like for you. The first step to reaching “healthy” is leaving diet culture behind and embracing a lifestyle of balance and mindfulness.
